Thanksgiving 2010!

Ok, if you ask me, NOTHING says "holiday cheer" better than seeing John McClane mow down a bunch of terrorists whilst sitting on your couch, half comatose, after you've stuffed about 16 lbs. of turkey and pumpkin pie into your arteries.

Make NO mistake,  Die Hard is THE perfect Thanksgiving/ pre-Christmas flick!  It all started when I watched it with a bunch of buddies for Thanksgiving close to 10 years ago in college and it's become a tradition ever since!
Yipee-ki-yay motherfuckers!
Want to get into the holiday mood?  Die Hard is IT, baby! Bonus points for  Run DMC's "Chrismas In Hollis" and ALAN FUCKING RICKMAN as Hans Gruber.  Oh yeah, and the action is pretty epic too.  ( I don't know about you, but I always end up giggling like a school girl when John McClane throws that computer down that elevator shaft.)

And did I mention that Alan Rickman is in this too?  Pass me another piece of apple pie.  It's about to get awesome in here..

Have a safe holiday season Geekshelf-ers!

Two of my favorite films of ALL TIME!

Hey Bloggers!  I recently picked up two of my favoirte films of ALL TIME on blu-ray and thought I'd share some of the images here on the Geekshelf...

Both films come with a booklet, and TONS of extras, although "M" is only a single disc release, whereas Seven Samurai has two (as seen below).

I love Criterion releases
I popped the discs in quickly to see just how the transfers looked and I have to say, I'm impressed.  This is really the best I've seen both films look and I really can't wait to dive in and watch them in their entirety.
Wonderful essays about the film in the book insert
For anyone who still hasn't seen these films, go out right now and check em out!  You can thank me later.

Confirmed: Martin Freeman cast as Bilbo Baggins!

A GREAT choice, in my opinion. I've been such a huge fan of Freeman since I saw him in the BBC version of The Office.

I really think he's got what it takes to give Bilbo the charm, curiosity, and genuine warmth that Tolkien wrote in his books.    You can see the other cast members HERE in this link from Aint-It-Cool  .  Sound off guys!  What do you think?!

Movie of the Month: The Secret in their Eyes

Joy and I saw this at a Pixar last week and I have to say it really blew both of us away. Without spoiling too much of the film, I'll just say that it follows a retired lawyer as he tries to bring closure to an unsolved homicide case he dealt with years ago. The performances are pitch perfect and the film really takes its time to set up all the characters and their relationships with each other before things get dark and serious.

And let me tell you:  when things get dark, they GET DARK.  Like, Scorcese DARK.  The mystery keeps piling on then peeling away and by the end, your jaw is literally on the ground as you see exactly what happens to these characters you've grown attached to over the last two hours.  It's not all doom and gloom though....I was really surprised to find the audience laughing out loud several times during the movie and was in awe that the film could balance humor , drama, and noir so effortlessly.

Oh yeah, it also won the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Argentina).  You owe it to yourself to see this film.  For more information on "El Secreto De Sus Ojos" click HERE:
